Ecotherapy & Outdoor Therapy
Outdoor therapy, also known as ecotherapy, invites you to take your healing journey beyond four walls, engaging with the natural world as an active partner in your growth and self-discovery.
I’ve completed additional training in working therapeutically outdoors and explored this in depth through my MSc dissertation, which focused on the impact of nature in the therapeutic process.
What is Outdoor Therapy?
Outdoor therapy, sometimes called walk and talk therapy, blends the benefits of traditional counselling with the restorative power of nature. Whether walking through woodland paths, pausing beside a river, or sitting in a quiet green space, this approach allows you to move at your own pace, both physically and emotionally.
Nature provides a grounding presence, offering a sense of calm and clarity that can be harder to access in a conventional therapy setting. Research supports the benefits of ecotherapy in reducing stress, improving mood, and enhancing overall well-being.
Who is Outdoor Counselling For?
This approach is ideal for those who:
- Feel stuck or overwhelmed by life’s challenges
- Experience anxiety, stress, or burnout
- Struggle with traditional indoor therapy settings
- Want to deepen their connection to nature and themselves
Benefits of Ecotherapy
- Encourages a natural flow of conversation, easing the pressure of face-to-face sessions
- Helps to regulate the nervous system through gentle movement
- Supports emotional release in a safe, open environment
- Enhances creativity and problem-solving
- Offers a deeper spiritual connection to the natural world, helping you attune to something greater than yourself

What to Expect from an Outdoor Therapy Session
Sessions take place in a peaceful outdoor setting close to Hexham. Whether we walk, sit, or a mixture of both, our time together is led by what feels right for you. The natural world becomes an active co-facilitator, reflecting and mirroring emotions in profound ways.
For many, being in nature can awaken a sense of interconnectedness, not only with the earth but also with their inner world. This can create a space for spiritual exploration, where personal insight and meaning emerge naturally.
